As you get ready to start your graduate journey here at Kent State, there are some important next steps you need to take in order to get started.We are here to help along the way so you get your graduate career off to a great start!
Next Steps for First-Year Students
Congratulations on your admission to ɫapp! As you prepare for your visa interview and arrival to Kent State, we want to take you through the process step by step. Students who intend to study virtually for the start of their program can learn more about available resourcesby reviewing ourVirtual Study Resources page.
Welcome to our university community. To get started, follow thesesteps:
- Log into your FlashLine account.
- Request your immigration document (I-20 or DS-2019).
- Apply for your student visa.
- Review the immunization and health insurance requirements.
- Share our International Parents & Families Guide with your loved ones.
- Arrange your travel dates and transportation.
- Secure your housing.
After those steps are complete, then we have more suggestions to help you get connected to our community.
1. Download 2 important apps
For all new international students - Download the GroupMe App
This app is exclusively for incoming international students who have already obtained their I-20 or DS-2019 immigration document. You can use GroupMe by invitation only to:
- Connect to other international students arriving for the same semester.
- Contact on-campus Student Leaders who can answer your questions.
- Get ready for upcoming student orientations.
- Chat with class members on group projects.

For all new students - Download the ZeeMee App
You're invited to join the ɫapp private chat community for admitted students on ZeeMee! Join this platform of over 8,000 Future Flashes to chat about anything and everything Kent State. Get involved and explore all the ways to connect:
- Chat with fellow admitted students who share your interests.
- Ask important questions with University Housing or your Admissions Counselor.
- Take the roommate quiz to find your best match for on-campus housing.
- Participate in live, social events.

2. Complete the Online Orientation Program
Start the hybrid International Student Orientation (ISO) program.
- Note: Only students with a valid immigration document can participate in ISO.
3. Register for your in-person Kent State Orientation Programs
- Destination Kent State (DKS) - All new undergraduate students attend DKS. Attend a special session on the day after in-person International Student Orientation (ISO) without registering in advance.
- Graduate Student Orientation (GSO) - All new graduate students attend GSO. Follow instructions emailed by Graduate Studies to register.
- English as a Second Language (ESL) Orientation – All new ESL students register for ESL Orientation by contacting the ESL Department at eslreg@kent.edu.

Deferral Procedures
If you only intend to study remotely temporarily or you are interested in deferring your admission, please notify us of your plans by clicking this button, Deferral Request Process. This will direct you how to defer your admission within your student portal. TheInternational Admissions and the team that creates your I-20 know that changes need to be made. If you already have an I-20, then you will need an updated immigration document. Following these instructions will help us to take the necessary steps to provide that document to you.
